Eating Smart At The Vending Machine to Help Control Your Blood Sugar and Weight

Of course, everyone should maintain a healthy balanced eating plan. But it's not negotiable for people managing Type 2 diabetes. In fact, many people can manage their Type 2 diabetes simply by choosing the right kind and amount of food. But you're stuck at work and don't seem to have any chance of getting home for a healthy meal anytime soon. You have two options...
  • take out, or
  • the vending machine,
both of which seem equally as dangerous to your health and control of your blood sugar.
If you opt to fend for the healthy fare at the vending machine, we have you covered. While you won't get perfect nutrition here, it doesn't have to be all bad. The good news is the smartest choices you can pick up at the vending machine will typically be lower in total calories than what you would get from the take-out place. Fewer calories only due to the fact they're "snack sized" so at least you won't be going over calorie budget.
Here's what to choose...
1. Nuts. If you can find unsalted, go for it. If not, increase your water intake that day. At least with nuts, you'll be controlling your overall sugar intake and be taking in some healthy fats along with protein to help fuel your body.
If it's a larger sized package, just eat half. Nut calories add up quickly.
2. Popcorn. If you can find a box of microwaveable popcorn in the vending machine, that's your next best option. While popcorn may contain some fat from the butter flavor used, popcorn is relatively light if you eat just a few cups.
Plus, it's also an excellent source of fiber, so will go a long way towards keeping your hunger and blood sugar in check as well.
The only varieties of popcorn you'll want to avoid are the flavored varieties, which typically contain trans fats you don't need to be taking in. If it's the regular flavor popcorn, you're set.
3. Pretzels. Choosing pretzels over chips is another smart move. While pretzels are quite high in carbs and sodium, they lack the fat chips would deliver. Eat just half the package to help tide you over until you arrive home and eat something with a little more protein.
Be sure to increase your water intake with these as well.
4. Granola Bar. Finally, if you can find a granola bar, always opt for this over a chocolate bar. While most granola bars do contain a dose of sugar, it won't be nearly as high as the alternative. And, you'll typically get some fiber and a little protein from any nuts or seeds the bar contains, so it will work best to help keep your hunger and blood sugar stable.
So there you have the best vending machine bets to settle on if you are in a tight situation. Choose these and you can feel satisfied you did your best to practice damage control over your blood sugar.
Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.
