Facial Injections Wage War on Wrinkles

With so many brilliant minds at work in modern science, it's no wonder that we've found numerous ways to wage war on the most classic sign of aging: wrinkles. These lines written in our skin change the way our faces look, affecting the way we are perceived or treated by others. Wrinkles give away our personal stories. They might be the result of smoking too many cigarettes or spending too much time in the sun. They tell what kinds of expressions our faces have formed in repetition over the years, our grimaces and furrows as well as our laughter and winks.

When wrinkles give away too much information about us, facial injections can be the way to smooth out the situation. Most likely, you know someone who has had work done with facial injections, also called dermal fillers. So what exactly are facial injections and how do they work against wrinkles? This minimally invasive process is literally the insertion of a gel-like substance into the skin, plumping up a section of dermal tissue until the folds in that area are flattened out.

There are several different fillers, both natural and synthetic, that are commonly used by doctors these days. Natural fillers include bovine collagen ("bovine" meaning from cows), hyaluronic acid gel, and fat cells taken from the body of the patient. With bovine collagen, doctors should perform an allergy test on the patient at least four weeks before the scheduled procedure to ensure there won't be any negative reaction. Natural fillers tend to be absorbed into the body somewhere between six months and two years after insertion. Patients will usually have to have at least one repeat procedure for lasting effects.

Synthetic fillers include biodegradable polymers and calcium hydroxyapatite. These injections are often called semi-permanent or even permanent, in some cases, depending on the condition of the skin, substance used, and skill of the doctor performing the work.

Facial injection procedures tend to be quick and relatively painless. Sessions can take as little as fifteen minutes, though sometimes patients will have to undergo multiple sessions over a couple of weeks in order to achieve lasting effects. A local anesthetic is often used in the areas of the procedure, and patients report minimal discomfort. If you want the stories told by the wrinkles in your face to disappear, then it's a matter of doing your research and finding a good doctor!
